The Oude Kerk is Amsterdam's oldest building and one of its most surprising contemporary art spaces — a church that has never stopped evolving.
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) is Amsterdam's oldest building, dating back to 1213, and one of its most fascinating contradictions: a medieval Gothic church that now functions as a contemporary art space, surrounded by the windows of the Red Light District. On Museum Night, the Oude Kerk presents a specially commissioned sound installation that fills the vast nave with layered recordings of the city — church bells, canal water, street noise, and human voices — creating an immersive meditation on Amsterdam's layered history. The church's famous organ, one of the finest in the Netherlands, is played live at midnight.
