A charming museum in a historic canal house explores the Dutch love affair with coffee, tea, and chocolate — and the global trade that made it possible.
Museum de Moriaan is housed in a beautifully preserved 17th-century canal house and tells the story of the Dutch trade in coffee, tea, and cocoa — commodities that transformed Dutch society and the global economy in the Golden Age. On Museum Night, the museum presents a sensory programme that invites visitors to taste, smell, and explore the history of these three beverages. A coffee historian leads a tasting session exploring the differences between historic and modern coffee preparation methods, while a chocolatier demonstrates the art of making traditional Dutch chocolate. The museum's collection of historic tea sets, coffee grinders, and trade documents is on display.
